Kaneohe, on the windward side of Oahu, is a residential neighborhood of Honolulu. The land has been settled since ancient times, and was often used for agriculture. In modern times the crop fields have given way to single family homes, condominiums, and the Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The name Kaneohe means “bamboo man” after an ancient local fable.

Larger than many of the neighborhoods to the south, Kaneohe boasts just under 35,000 residents. Downtown Honolulu is approximately a half hour drive away, making this a great commuter neighborhood for those working there. You don’t have to go to Honolulu for fun though, as there is plenty of it closer to home. Kaneohe is home to three golf courses, all of which are open to the public, the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens, and of course the lovely Kaneohe beaches. Kaneohe Bay is accessible via the public pier, nearby in He’eia Kea. The newly opened Hawaii National Veteran’s Cemetery is also in Kaneohe.

Kaneohe homes are readily available. Proximity to the shoreline is at a premium, with homes along the water averaging in the $900K range. Prices drop slightly as you move inland, and it is possible to find a 2-bedroom home for around $700K. Many homes in the area are of newer construction, or older homes that have been upgraded. Kaneohe condominiums are also fairly easy to find, with prices around 500K, depending on location and amenities. Most condos have gorgeous ocean views, although those do come at a premium.
